Wings Over War Eagle Field
A piece of aerospace history spanning two continents. You won’t want to miss this inspiring and unforgettable display!
War Eagle Field, a 640-acre plant located in Lancaster, California, opened in 1941 to provide training to British and Canadian cadets. The schools were operated by Major C.C. Mosely, president of Polaris Flight Academy. The Royal Air Force cadets were taught primary, basic and advanced flying instructions, while its second purpose was to teach the Eagle Squadron advanced training.
On February 13, 1942, a 21-year-old cadet by the name of Meyer Bernard Himelstaub lost his life after he accidentally walked into a spinning airplane propeller. Himelstaub, born in Poland of Jewish descent, fled Europe to escape the Nazi invasion. He made his way from Poland to Britain and joined the war effort by enlisting in the RAF. His mother and brother suffered in the Warsaw ghetto and two concentration camps, but survived nonetheless.
Himelstaub was buried at Lancaster Cemetery, since at the time there was no way to send his body home. According to the Ledger Gazette newspaper, at the funeral, Himelstaub’s casket was draped with the Union Jack and his flying helmet and goggles placed inside. Band members from Antelope Valley High School played in the procession. His headstone simply reads, “For King and Country,” and bears the Star of David for his Jewish heritage.

Erickson B-25 Mitchell WASP S.O.A.R. Tour
The Erickson Aircraft Collection will bring its North American B-25 Mitchell to the 2020 Los Angeles County Air Show. The WASP SOAR Tour features an all- female flight crew and will honor the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II in an effort to generate increased interest in aviation and guide young women towards careers in the industry. The B-25 WASP SOAR Tour transforms the iconic bomber aircraft into an interactive, experiential learning opportunity for youth to enjoy.
The key purpose of the tour is to introduce young women to aviation opportunities rooted in the fundamentals of STEM: aviation mechanics, technology, and navigation exhibits help them realize their own potential by unlocking their imagination and empowering them to follow their dreams. The tour’s mission also implements the key characteristics of the “SOAR” initiative: (S) – Self-respect, (O) – Overcome obstacles, (A) – Act on your passion, (R) – Recognize your inner rockstar.
To inspire young women to explore careers in STEM, the all-female “WASP” crew consists of modern trailblazers in aviation. These aviatrices have direct involvement with the innovative and empowering STEM exhibits, giving young women quality one-on-one mentorship as they consider their education and career paths. Because of the design, young women have a chance to interact with real female pilots, co-pilots, flight engineers, and support crew who, like the WASP of World War II, prove that even the biggest dreams can be achieved when you SOAR.
